Wilmot, WI (WLIP)–On September 11, 2024, Wilmot Union High School was placed in a secure hold for 45 minutes as a precaution after authorities searched for an armed, suicidal male near the Wisconsin-Illinois state line.

Around 12:06 p.m., the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department was asked by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office to assist in locating the suspect along Fox River Road, near the school.

Working with the School Resource Officer and Wilmot Union High School Administration, Sheriff’s officials ensured that students were safe and not at risk during the incident.

At 12:30 p.m., the school entered a secure hold, preventing anyone from entering or leaving until the suspect was located in Illinois at approximately 1:20 p.m.

The secure hold was lifted, and classes resumed as normal, with no students ever in danger.

In a statement, Sheriff Zoerner emphasized the priority placed on student safety: “The safety and security of our children and students will always be one of my greatest concerns… We will do everything possible to keep them and our community safe.”
